At 750 metres elevation, Monte Verde dominates Mindelo and Porto Grande Bay. The highest point of São Vicente, it can be reached on foot or by vehicle for a unique panorama over the Cape Verdean archipelago.

Monte Verde is the highest point on the island of São Vicente, in Cape Verde, at 750 metres elevation. Dominating Mindelo and Porto Grande Bay, this volcanic massif offers an exceptional panorama over the archipelago in clear weather. Unlike other Cape Verdean islands, São Vicente is arid, and Monte Verde is one of the few preserved natural spaces on the island, with denser vegetation due to the moisture carried by the trade winds.

Practical information at a glance

  • Access: by car or taxi from Mindelo; the track leading to the summit is passable by 4x4 or on foot.
  • Recommended duration: half a day for the ascent and descent on foot, 1 to 2 hours by vehicle.
  • Clothing: hiking shoes recommended, strong wind at the summit — bring an extra layer.
  • Entrance: free access.

What you'll see

From the summit, your gaze stretches over Mindelo and its port, Porto Grande Bay, and on clear days, the nearby islands of Santo Antão and Santa Luzia. The landscape alternates between bare volcanic rock and pockets of scrub vegetation. The climb progressively reveals the island's contrasts: coastal urbanisation on one side, raw relief on the other.

History and context

São Vicente is geologically young, entirely of volcanic origin. Monte Verde, its highest point, long served as a visual landmark for navigators entering Porto Grande Bay, a historic stopover on transatlantic routes. The island owes much of its development to this strategic port, which was active from the 19th century onwards under British influence.

Highlights of the visit

The panorama over Mindelo and the bay

The view over Porto Grande from the heights is one of the most striking in the archipelago. The contrast between the white city, the blue of the bay and the arid surrounding reliefs is particularly striking in late morning, before the heat haze settles in.

Trade wind vegetation

The north-east facing slopes capture the moisture from the dominant winds. You can observe shrub and herbaceous species absent from the rest of the island, giving Monte Verde a singular botanical character for São Vicente.

Hiking from Mindelo

Several trails allow you to reach the summit on foot from the outskirts of Mindelo. The climb is demanding but accessible to a trained hiker. The path crosses peripheral neighbourhoods before gaining open relief.

Photography tips

Morning light is ideal: the sun illuminates Mindelo and the bay from the east, without backlighting. In late afternoon, golden tones on the volcanic rocks are striking. Bring a wide-angle lens to capture the entire bay. In strong winds, protect your equipment.

Location and access

Monte Verde is located east of Mindelo, accessible by taxi or rental vehicle from the city centre. The asphalt road gives way to a track as you approach the summit. No regular public transport serves the site. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is limited to the base of the mountain; the summit is not equipped.

In the immediate vicinity: the centre of Mindelo and its waterfront, the natural starting point for the excursion.

In the area

  • Mindelo — cultural capital of Cape Verde, known for its morna music scene and colonial architecture.
  • Porto Grande Bay — one of the finest natural anchorages in the Atlantic, visible from the summit.
  • Laginha Beach — Mindelo's urban beach, ideal for extending your day after the descent.
