Many people tend to claim that Cape Verde derives its name from the fact that it was once a remarkably green country. While it's true that this region was once more verdant and has experienced increasing aridity over the years, the name "Cape Verde" actually originates from a cape located in Senegal. During the era when Portuguese navigators sailed along African coasts in search of the sea route to the Indies for the spice trade, they named the capes according to their appearance and characteristics. For example, the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa owes its name to the hope they held of rounding it to reach the Indian Ocean and discover a new commercial route for spices.

In 1444, when they reached the present-day location of Dakar, after traversing the arid and desert coast of Mauritania, they discovered a cape that jutted into the sea. Noticing that this place was verdant and covered with vegetation, they named it Cape Verde. To this day, the tip of Dakar still bears the name of the Cape Verde Quarter in remembrance of this event.

A few years later, when they discovered islands off this cape, they named them the Cape Verde Islands.
