·

Just 10 km from Mindelo, São Pedro blends wild beaches, steady winds for windsurfers, and a panoramic trail to the Dona Amélia lighthouse.

Nestled in the southwestern part of São Vicente island, in the northern reaches of the Cap-Vert archipelago, the village of São Pedro captivates visitors with its expansive, peaceful beach.

São Pedro, a unique destination

São Pedro is a fishing village located about 10 km from Mindelo, the capital of São Vicente island. It is home to the eponymous beach, with its black and golden sand, virtually deserted and serene. A sanctuary where you can unwind without interruption. Yet that is far from its only appeal—you can also pursue various water sports here.

A lighthouse stands 2 km from the beach. Perched atop a cliff, this structure offers lovely views of the sea and passing vessels below. The path leading to it offers an easy yet breathtaking hike.

A brief history

The village of São Pedro was mentioned as a small port in French cartographer and hydrographer Jacques-Nicolas Bellin's 1747 map. The latest population census recorded 991 inhabitants in this locality, consisting mainly of fishermen.

Today

São Pedro is a charming village, composed of colorful houses. A few modern hotels and restaurants line its beach. The beach itself is world-renowned for windsurfing, thanks to its consistent winds.

What to see and do in São Pedro?

Before settling down on the beach, take a stroll to enjoy the various vistas it offers, and to find the perfect spot for your relaxation. Wide and measuring approximately 1 km, this expanse of sand forms a bay and is framed by low mountains. São Vicente's airport lies to the north, just a short distance from the beach. Planes may pass overhead as you unwind on the sand—a spectacle some travelers enjoy.

You can try the beachfront restaurants, where quality cuisine at reasonable prices awaits. Seafood and lobster feature prominently on the menu.

Large waves strike the beach, which unfortunately makes it unsuitable for swimming. However, it is perfect for surfers and windsurfing enthusiasts. Snorkeling and diving are also practiced here. Sea turtles are easily spotted.

Visitors to São Pedro often extend their stay by hiking the trail that leads to Farol de Dona Amélia, a 14-meter-high lighthouse built in 1894, perched on a rocky cliff face at the southwestern tip of São Vicente island. The path is narrow and vertiginous, requiring about thirty minutes to traverse. It reveals a small, paradisiacal cove and affords distant views of São Pedro's magnificent bay. This route is not, however, recommended for children.
