1. From Ponta do Sol to Cruzinha da Garça
  Essential hikes in Cape Verde

Ponta do Sol is a small town located on the coast of Santo Antão island. Of volcanic origin, the island features exceptional reliefs that delight trekkers from around the world. The most popular trail connects Ponta do Sol to Cruzinha da Garça, a fishing village located on the island's northern coast.

This clifftop path offers stunning ocean views and is dotted with flowers (to raise awareness about preserving its flora, Cape Verde's currency features several endemic plants!). During your journey, you'll cross several valleys and charming villages such as Forminguinhas or the splendid Fontainhas, known for its terraced crops.

    Essential hikes in Cape Verde

The hike connecting Ponta do Sol to Chã de Igreja allows you to extend the previous route. After crossing the villages of Fontainhas, Forminguinhas and Cruzinha, the trail leads to the small town of Chã de Igreja, nestled in the Ribeira da Garça valley. If you extend the initial itinerary, it's advisable to sleep in Cruzinha to recover (the hike from Ponta do Sol requires more than 9 hours of walking).

If Cruzinha is your starting point, put on your hiking boots, buy a bottle – local water is not potable! – and head toward Chã de Igreja. During moments of fatigue (this hike is demanding), look around and admire the ocean below… Once you arrive, take time to discover the town and its charming little church.

3. From Tarrafal to Monte Trigo

Located on Santo Antão island, this hike is suited for experienced hikers. While the route is relatively straightforward (simply follow the coastal trail), its steep terrain requires good fitness. It departs from the town of Tarrafal (renowned for its long black sand beaches) with no turns until you reach Monte Trigo.

After several hours of walking through volcanic landscapes, you'll arrive at the charming little fishing village… For the return, it's recommended to take a boat back. Why? Monte Trigo is only accessible via the same trail you hiked or by sea. If you don't want to retrace your trek in reverse, opt for a boat ride – you might be lucky enough to spot whales!

Upon arriving in São Pedro, head toward the beach and begin your excursion with a short coastal walk. Then take the path that winds through the rocks…

This clifftop circuit is ideal for admiring Cape Verde's landscapes as a family. After more than two hours of hiking, you'll reach Dona Amélia lighthouse, erected in 1894 (it's possible to visit it).

5. From Chã das Caldeiras to Mosteiros

  Essential hikes in Cape Verde
In the south of the Cape Verde archipelago, you'll find Fogo island. It's home to Chã das Caldeiras (the caldera of Pico do Fogo volcano). This vast volcanic crater is accessible from the small village of the same name. After a walk around its caldera, the trail winds through a forest of acacia and eucalyptus trees, then continues into the Mosteiros region.

This excursion is therefore divided into 3 main stages. After leaving the caldera (1), you'll reach the entrance to the forest park (2) – where entry is charged (€1 per person) – then a cabin, where the road divides. You must then turn right (3) and walk to your final destination.

More humid than the rest of the island, the Mosteiros region is also considered Fogo's "breadbasket,
